Ayurvedic Eye Care: Protect, Rejuvenate, and Strengthen Your Eyes

Ayurveda classifies five tanmatras—the subtle elements responsible for sense perception: sight (form), taste, sound, touch, and smell. Of all the “doorways” through which energy escapes—eyes, mouth, ears, and nose—the eyes release up to 80% of energy when they are open. Combine this with the constant workload our eyes endure—from computers, driving, reading, and daily screen time—and it’s no wonder they often feel tired, strained, and depleted.

Ayurveda for the Eyes

Eye health is crucial for overall quality of life. Ayurvedic eye care focuses on both prevention and rejuvenation, helping preserve eyesight naturally and sustainably.

Preventative Eye Care

  • Use gentle salts such as pink Himalayan salt; regular salt can be harsh on the eyes.
  • Bathe the eyes with cool water every morning.
  • Reduce blue-light strain by using blue light glasses or filters when working on computers.
  • Avoid highly spicy foods, fried or processed meals, alcohol, and tobacco, which can damage eye health.
  • Protect your eyes from stressful or violent content in media; infuse your eyes with beauty by taking walks in nature or enjoying quiet, meditative eye contact with loved ones.
  • Avoid late nights and long naps.
  • Wear sunglasses during midday sun.
  • Meditate with eyes closed to preserve energy and rest the eyes.

Alleviating Dry Eyes

  • Place a drop of castor oil in each eye at bedtime. Massage the soles of your feet with a little castor oil too!
  • Use cucumber slices over the eyes to cool, moisten, and soothe.

Relieving Tired or Strained Eyes

  • Place cotton balls soaked in goat’s milk over the eyes.

  • Triphala eye wash is a universal remedy for many eye imbalances:

    1. Stir ½ tsp triphala powder into 1 cup boiled water (or crush 2 triphala tablets).

    2. Allow to cool and strain.

    3. Use an eye cup at bedtime to bathe the eyes for 3–5 minutes while blinking occasionally, or use swim goggles to bathe both eyes at once.

Yoga for the Eyes

Ayurveda recognizes that eyes benefit from exercise just as much as the mind and body. Try these techniques to strengthen, cleanse, and relax the eyes.

Trataka (Candle or Flame Gazing Meditation)

Trataka doubles as meditation and eye cleansing, calming the mind while improving focus and intuition.

Directions

  1. Use a ghee lamp with a cotton wick (less heat than a candle).
  2. Sit upright in a dark room, lamp at eye level, ~1.5 feet away.
  3. Place your palms on your thighs, either palm up or down.
  4. Fix your gaze on the flame tip, trying not to blink.
  5. When tears appear, close your eyes until the flame image disappears.
  6. Repeat several times, then sit with eyes closed, focusing on the space between the eyebrows.
