Ayurveda, the ancient science of life, teaches that each of us is born with a unique constitutional blueprint known as our dosha. These doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha—are formed from the five elements (space, air, fire, water, and earth) and govern how our bodies function, how our minds respond to stress, and how we interact with the world around us.
While we all contain all three doshas, most people have one or two that are dominant. When your dominant doshas are in balance, you feel energized, clear, and at ease. When they fall out of balance, physical discomfort, emotional stress, and fatigue can arise.
This guide serves as a starting point to help you understand the three doshas and explore how Ayurveda supports balance through lifestyle, diet, and daily rhythms.
Vata: The Mover and Shaker
Elements: Air + Space
Qualities: Dry, light, cold, mobile, subtle
Vata governs all movement in the body and mind—circulation, breathing, nerve impulses, creativity, and communication. It is the force that initiates action and change.
When balanced, vata brings creativity, enthusiasm, and adaptability. When imbalanced, it may lead to anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, dryness, and digestive irregularity.

Pitta: The Transformer
Elements: Fire + Water
Qualities: Hot, sharp, intense, oily, penetrating
Pitta governs metabolism and transformation, including digestion, absorption, body temperature, and intellect. It is responsible for focus, drive, and clarity.
In balance, pitta supports strong digestion, leadership, and discernment. Out of balance, it may show up as inflammation, irritability, burnout, skin issues, or digestive discomfort.

Kapha: The Stabilizer
Elements: Earth + Water
Qualities: Heavy, slow, cool, smooth, steady
Kapha provides structure, lubrication, and resilience. It governs immunity, endurance, emotional steadiness, and physical strength.
When balanced, kapha offers calm, compassion, and stamina. When excessive, it may manifest as lethargy, congestion, weight gain, or resistance to change.
