Bring the benefits of yoga to those unable to get down (or up from) the floor by adapting traditional asanas to the chair.

Chair yoga offers you the ability to improve your health through an amazing form of adaptive exercise. You are supported by a chair so you can receive yoga’s healing and restorative benefits.

This program will add a new dimension to your teaching and/or care-giving career and provide you with a firm foundation for teaching Chair Yoga.

 

Along with meditation, pranayama, and relaxation techniques, you will learn how to adapt the classical yoga asanas to the chair (vs. the floor).

 

Through educational talks, group discussion, and small group practice time, you will learn:

  • Sun Salutations A and B
  • The Moon Salutation
  • The Warrior Series

 

In addition, you will learn:

  • Double Chair Yoga (each student uses two chairs)
  • Partner Chair Yoga (two students, each on their own chair, working together as partners)
  • Weighted Chair Yoga (each student employs light hand weights in their practice)
  • The Standing Chair Asana

 

Practice Will Include:

  • How to assess if your student is safely able to take their practice off the chair
  • Practices for moving from seated to standing
  • Six Essential Standing Practices to increase strength, build balance, and bring more flexibility
  • The roll our feet play in balance
  • Foot strengthening exercises and reflexology
  • Standing practices with the chair to increase balance
  • Standing practices with the chair to increase flexibility

 

During your program, Brenda and Nancy will cover additional Eastern disciplines and modalities such as:


  • The 8 Brocades or Pad Tuan Chin

  • Arthritis-Relief Hand Movements
  • Knee strengthening exercises 

  • Various breathing techniques
  • Mudras to incorporate into your practice
  • Kirtan Kriya
  • Brain Balancing Series
  • 7 Chakras and their meanings, colors, sounds, and affirmations
  • Patanjali’s 8-fold path
  • The Four Agreements

 

You will receive a 200+ page color manual and a certificate stating you are a certified CYT ( Chair Yoga Teacher).

This course qualifies for 25 hours continuing education unites with Yoga Alliance.


You do not have to be a yoga teacher to take part in this training, but at least 25 hours of yoga experience is required. This course may be of particular interest to yoga teachers working with the elderly or disabled students; body workers including physiotherapists and massage therapists; and those caring for others, either in a professional or personal capacity.

Brenda Yarnold, M.A., E- RYT 200 studied chair yoga under the tutelage of Lakshmi Voelker. She is the founder of Bella Buddha Yoga in Belmar, New Jersey; and extensive training has included work with leading yoga teachers, osteopaths and physiotherapists Dr. Loren Fishman, Ellen Saltonstall, Julie Gudmestad, Tom Meyers and Dr. Baxter Bell, among others. She also holds children’s yoga certifications with Radiant Child and ChildLight Yoga.

Nancy Hedeen, MA, RYT 200, began her yoga journey after a profound experience during her first restorative yoga class. Later, she turned towards the integration of yoga with chair work after witnessing the powerful benefits it brought to her mother, who had Alzheimer’s. Nancy continues to strive for understanding of the mind, body and spirit through yoga, reiki and meditation.

A warning about using GPS!

We do not recommend using your GPS for driving directions, as many roads are incorrectly marked in the navigation system and inputting our address will take you on a wild ride. Instead, we recommend using Google maps (above). Many prefer to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway route only May through October since the road closes often in winter.

Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT) in Charlotte, NC (100 miles).
Tri-Cities Regional Airport (TRI) in Johnson City, TN (80 miles)
Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) in Greensboro, NC (110 miles)

Shuttles

The Hickory Hop shuttle goes from Charlotte airport to Boone five times daily. The cost is $90 per person. Please mention you are going to the Art of Living Retreat Center in Boone. Reservations are required, so please book ahead by contacting them directly. (828) 327-2340

Car Rental

Enterprise, Avis, Alamo, Hertz, National and Budget all offer car rentals at Charlotte airport. Please contact the rental company directly for pricing.
Uber: Uber has arrived in Boone. It is often possible to take an Uber from Charlotte airport all the way to the center’s reception. This is a very cost-effective option when traveling with friends or family.

Public Bus

The Mountaineer Express goes from Boone to Charlotte at 9:25am and from Charlotte to Boone at 6pm daily. Please check their schedule for current timings. To reach the Charlotte bus stop, you can take the Cat5 airport express. Once you arrive in Boone, you can take an Uber to the center.
