According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than 10 million adults have osteoporosis, and another 44 million adults have osteopenia, and are at-risk for broken bones, immobility, pain, placement in nursing homes, isolation, and other health problems. It’s more important than ever to understand bone health and apply preventive and reversing methods of treatment to bone loss.
In this experiential program with Loren Fishman, MD, and yoga teacher Liz Larson, you’ll learn to teach others yoga poses shown to reverse osteoporosis as you gain a deeper understanding of bone health and how yoga works to prevent and reverse bone loss.
This evidence-based workshop is built on Dr. Fishman’s 10-year study of the effects of yoga on bone mineral density, as well as improvements in posture, balance, strength, range of motion and coordination. All factors that further reduce your risk of fracture, and none of which you get with any medicine. With yoga, there are no side effects, and you can do it for as long as you live.
Through group discussion, physical movement, hands-on experience, and one-on-one sharing, you’ll learn
- The definitive way to do the 12 yoga poses proven to reverse osteoporosis
- How to teach beginner, intermediate, and classical versions of these poses
- About the four types of scoliosis
- New poses specific for scoliosis
- How to evaluate your students’ levels of ability and effort, and the art of advancing people from one level to the next.
The workshop presents a non-drug solution to a growing national and international problem. Take home the knowledge, skills, and certification to successfully reverse osteoporosis and establish good bone health in yourself and your students.
No previous experience needed to take and learn this course. However, there are requirements for certification.
Precourse work Upon registration, you will receive a course manual which you should read in advance. Dr. Fishman’s and Ellen Saltonstall’s book, Yoga for Osteoporosis (W.W. Norton, 2010) is also recommended reading.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- 5 years’ experience and a 200-hour certification in yoga teaching **
- Practicum at the end of the workshop
- Grade of 70 or above on written test at end of course
Those who complete this course and already have five years experience teaching yoga are considered certified. Certified teachers are eligible to serve as teachers in Dr. Fishman’s medical study examining the effects of yoga on osteoporosis.
**Those who complete this course and have less than five years’ of experience teaching yoga are considered registered. Those participants who complete the course (either as registered or certified teachers), will have the option to have their names listed as Dr. Fishman Method osteoporosis teachers on Dr. Fishman’s website, sciatica.org.
