According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation,more than 10 million adults have osteoporosis and another 43 million adults are at-risk for broken bones, immobility, pain, placement in nursing homes, isolation, and other health problems. It’s more important than ever to understand bone health and apply preventative and reversing methods of treatment.

Learn to treat and to teach others to treat their own osteoporosis, a condition affecting 54 million Americans and more than 200 million people worldwide. This valuable knowledge will benefit you and others in your community throughout your lives.

Discover the bone-building way to do the twelve poses, how to judge where to start with yourself and others, and how and when to progress from one level to another.

Yoga improves bone mineral density and bone quality, as per Dr. Fishman’s 10-year study. It also improves your balance, posture, strength, range of motion and coordination, and lowers your anxiety: all factors that further reduce your risk of fracture, and none of which you get with any medicine. With yoga, there are no side effects, and you can do it for as long as you live. New poses for scoliosis complement this program.

Join Dr. Fishman in this 40-hour course—20 online hours and 20 on-site at the Art of Living Retreat Center—to gain a deeper understanding of bone health and how yoga works to prevent and reverse bone loss. Through group discussion, physical movement, hands-on experience, and one-on-one sharing, you’ll learn

  • How to teach beginner, intermediate, and classical versions of the 12 yoga poses proven to reverse osteoporosis
  • The four types of scoliosis
  • How to evaluate your students’ levels of ability and effort, and the art of advancing people from one level to the next.

The workshop presents a non-drug solution to a growing national and international problem. Take home the knowledge, skills, and certification to successfully reverse osteoporosis and establish good bone health in yourself and your students.


  • 5 years experience and a 200-hour certification in yoga teaching **
  • Pass an online written test
  • Practicum at the end of the workshop

*Once registered, YogaUOnline will email an access link to the course materials. We encourage you to complete the online portion prior to attending the in-person workshop.

** Those with less than five year’s experience are encouraged to participate and will be awarded Registration certificates, which will be transferred to full certification after five years experience. Special consideration may be given to physicians, nurses, and body workers regarding these requirements. 

 Note Passing the online theoretical and practical exam certifies participants to teach this method and teach people in Dr. Fishman’s studies. If you have less than five years of teaching experience, you’ll be registered and automatically advanced to certified when you reach five years. Some exceptions are made for physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and other bodyworkers. Those registered or certified will have their names appear on

Open to everyone—all levels of yoga experience. This program could be of special interest to yoga teachers, bodyworkers, health-care professionals, and anyone looking for definitive information and training on healing poses.

This program is approved for 40 CEUs by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). 

Precourse Work Upon registration, you’ll receive an assignment of online work to complete prior to attending the workshop.

Loren Fishman

Loren Fishman, MD, BPhil (Oxon), medical director of Manhattan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, is a world-recognized pioneer in the treatment of low back pain, piriformis syndrome, osteoporosis, and other conditions. He is on the staff at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and a past president of the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The author and editor of 96 academic articles and 12  books about yoga and medical conditions, including Yoga for Osteoarthritis and Yoga for Osteoporosis (with Ellen Saltonstall), he has been listed in Castle and Connolly’s “Best Doctors” more than 10 times. Dr. Fishman has a private practice in Manhattan in which he uses yoga to treat many medical conditions.

For room reservations, spa retreats, and Art of Living Retreat Center (AOLRC) signature retreats, we have the following cancellation policy:

  • Refunds are available (less a $50 processing fee) up to eight days before your program or stay.
  • Nonrefundable credit toward a future AOLRC program or stay (less a $50 processing fee) is available if you give notice between seven and one day(s) before your program or stay. Credit may be applied to any AOLRC program or stay for one year following date of issue.
  • No credit or refund is available if you cancel on the arrival day, if you do not show up, or if you leave an event early for any reason. No refund will be available if you attend a program and are dissatisfied with its presentation or content.  AOLRC reserves the right to cancel a program at any time. If AOLRC cancels a program, you will receive a full refund.  Some programs may have special cancellation policies; see individual workshop descriptions.  For all other retreats, please be sure to check the registration page specific to that retreat.

To encourage a healthy environment we ask that guest to not consume alcohol or meat in our public spaces, however, guests may enjoy these items in their rooms.
