Maya Breuer is Head of Research and Yoga Advancement for Yoga Alliance, where she is developing the Yoga Alliance Think Tank and offering a monthly International Gathering Sangha.
She is also the creator of the Yoga Retreat for Women of Color™ (now in its 25th year), co-founder of the Black Yoga Teachers Alliance, and Trustee Emerita of Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. In 1986, she began to practice yoga and received her yoga teacher certification in 1992. To deepen her understanding of Hatha and the philosophical perspectives of Yoga, Maya traveled to India and attended the Lakulish School in Gujarat, India. There, her studies included yoga philosophy and culture, with a particular focus on the Yoga Sutras and the Upanishads, advanced yoga asana and pranayama.
