Art of Living founder Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar reminds us that “the first step in yoga is to let go, to relax.” When the body relaxes, the mind naturally follows. And letting go doesn’t have to be a struggle—it can be deeply nourishing, even blissful.
One of Ayurveda’s most profound ways to support this release is Shirodhara, often considered the most soothing therapy offered by this ancient healing system known as the Science of Life.
What Is Shirodhara?
Shirodhara comes from Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old holistic healing tradition of India. The word itself explains the practice:
- Shiro means head
- Dhara means flow
Together, Shirodhara refers to the continuous, gentle flow of warm oil over the forehead. The purpose of this therapy is to calm the nervous system, quiet the mind, and induce deep states of rest and relaxation.
Traditionally, Shirodhara has been used to help relieve
- Stress and mental fatigue
- Insomnia and disturbed sleep
- Anxiety, fear, and emotional imbalance
- Headaches and nervous system disorders.
Many guests report entering a meditative, dream-like state during the treatment—one where the mind finally softens its grip and learns how to rest.
Letting go, here, becomes a blissful process.
The Shirodhara Experience
During a Shirodhara session, a thin stream of warm, herb-infused oil—often sesame oil—is slowly poured from a copper vessel onto the forehead for an extended period, typically around 50 minutes.
A trained Ayurvedic therapist gently guides the stream across the third eye area and important marma (energy) points on the forehead. This steady, rhythmic flow has a powerful effect on the brain and nervous system, signaling the body that it is safe to relax.
The result is a profound sense of calm—often described as balanced rest for both body and mind. This is why Shirodhara is sometimes called “bliss therapy”: its effects reach beyond the physical and into the deeper layers of consciousness.
Enhancing the Benefits: Shirodhara and Abhyanga
The benefits of Shirodhara are greatly enhanced when it is performed after an Ayurvedic oil massage (Abhyanga). While Abhyanga soothes muscular tension and calms physical restlessness, Shirodhara works more subtly—settling the mind, emotions, and sensory overload.
Together, they create a complete relaxation experience: calming both the body and the mind in harmony.
Shirodhara and the Doshas
At the Art of Living Shankara Spa, Shirodhara treatments are performed by heart-centered therapists, specially trained in Ayurvedic therapies.
An experienced Ayurvedic practitioner selects a customized, organic, herb-infused oil based on each guest’s unique constitution:
- Vata
- Pitta
- Kapha
Shirodhara is particularly grounding for vata types, who are more prone to restlessness, anxiety, and overactivity of the mind. Depending on one’s constitution and needs, Shirodhara may also be recommended as part of Panchakarma, Ayurveda’s classic detoxification and rejuvenation program.
